Ghana

It's all over, I'm home and I miss Ghana a lot! I had a lovely time although the kids tired me out, I spent my days with them being climbed on, chased and having my hair stroked/pulled! I also helped in the classroom where we did reading, writing and maths, as well as some crafts. I did a lot of one on one work with a girl who was dropped off at the orphanage while I was there, as sadly her mother was too ill to look after her anymore. It was very emotional seeing her being dropped off and having to say goodbye to her mum, but she became a lot more at home while I was there, and it was great to see her school work improve over the 2 weeks.

(left) Stevie Ray, he was one of my favourites! He always came up to me saying 'Please I want a book' even though he can't read, but loved having me read to him, as did James (right). James loved the little toy cars I brought along, he asked 'Are the toys staying here forever or will you take them home?' his face lit up when I told him the toys were staying there, he ran and told all of the other kids which made them all very happy.


We got the skipping ropes out a few times which caused some arguments over who got the best one, but they loved them and I had to count how many jumps they all did over and over again.
Thank you to whoever gave me a red skipping rope with wooden lady bird handles to take over, one of the children, Michael, used it for a while then told me:
'This is my favouritest jump rope I've ever seen!'





Here's Stevie Ray and Silas at nap time! All of the children slept from 1-3, they had beds to sleep in at night but for some reason at nap time they all just slept on mats on the floor. This nap plus their lunch meant that I wasn't needed for 3 hours- my lunch break was spent preparing lessons and worksheets for the children, reading and eating, but mostly sleeping!                                                                              





At the weekend we went to stay at Cape Coast at the beach, stopping on the way at Kakum National Park Walkway, 7 wobbly suspension bridges joined together, with brilliant views of the rainforest all around.

Thank you so much to everyone who donated money/toys/equipment for the orphanage, they loved the toys so much and I am so grateful that I was able to have such an experience.
Also a big thank you to Alex, Mari, Addy, Nate and Joel for having me to stay, it was really nice catching up with them and playing with the kids- we had a mattress rocket ship, a mosquito net jail and a doctors surgery on the floor!

Thanks again to everyone who made this trip possible, this was my first time away on my home but I very much doubt it will be my last.

80 Days To Go!

Flights are booked, appointment for jabs is booked (ah help!) and I've now raised £630!

I'm becoming really excited for my trip now as it's only 80 days away! I'm busy revising for exams at the moment so I haven't had so much time for fundraising, but I would be very thankful for any donations.

The total so far is great and covers my flights, however I need to raise a bit more to cover my jabs, visa, and  educational equipment for the children at the orphanage.



  If you're local I can babysit, preferably in the evenings in the time leading up to my exams but I can help during the days after the 17th June. 
 Here I am getting some practice in with my nephew on holiday in Tenerife. (Excuse the sunburn, I'll definitely need some factor 50 for Ghana)



The holiday also gave me some opportunity to practice spotting and pulling a big heavy suitcase off the luggage carousel before I have to do it all by myself in July, hopefully my bags won't be so full that I dislocate a shoulder attempting to lift them!

First fundraiser

Cake sale!

I held a cake sale at church recently, and thanks to people's generous donations I raised £150! Here are some pictures of me and my friends baking the cakes, which included some Ghanaian flag buns!

I have also been doing a lot of ironing (because my mum's rubbish at it), so thanks to that and family donations, the total so far is £350!

Hello all!
I'm Suzie, I'm 15 years old and this Summer I will be travelling to Accra, Ghana to help in an orphanage for two weeks.

Beacon House Orphanage

I will be at the orphanage Monday-Friday 8.30-5, and will be helping out with various activities including:

• arts and crafts
• reading with the children
• helping with homework
• cleaning the house
• games and sports

I will be staying with missionary friends but need to raise £800 to cover the costs of my flights and vaccinations. I will also use any excess money raised to buy educational toys for the children at the orphanage.
